Grant’s Farm Announces Winner of Mural Contest
Artist and architect Javier Torres-Gomez’ submission will adorn the iconic Tiergarten façade
To celebrate its 120th anniversary, Grant’s Farm, the St. Louis landmark and home of the Busch family since 1903, put out a call for artists to design a permanent mural that celebrates the property’s many facets. After reviewing over 70 submissions, Grant’s Farm selected the design by Javier Torres-Gomez as the winner, and works by Maddie Baker and Makaila Bryant as the runners-up.
Torres’ mural best reflected the contest’s criteria which asked artists to honor the property’s natural environment, historic architecture, its many animals, the Busch family’s German heritage, and evoke the four seasons. His mural includes portraits of Grant’s Farm founder August A. Busch Sr. and his son August “Gussie” A. Busch, Jr., who opened the family farm to the public 70 years ago in 1954.“Torres’ entry captured it all – from the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales to the iconic landmarks and even kids feeding the goats, a favorite tradition at Grant’s Farm,” said Steve Byrd, general manager of Grant’s Farm. “It will be a long-standing beautiful new addition for guests to enjoy during a visit.”
Torres is a native of Mexico City, Mexico, and moved to St. Louis with his wife in 2012. An experienced architect, Torres is passionate about design and creativity. He has been drawing as a favorite pastime for as long as he can remember, and now his passions for art, architecture and St. Louis come together in the mural project at Grant’s Farm. Torres is currently painting the mural and guests will be able to view it during regular visits to the farm.“ My passion for St. Louis and its history has grown over the past 12 years of living here with my family,” said Torres. “Winning this contest to create a mural on a beautiful façade in Grant’s Farm for people to enjoy through the seasons is such a wonderful and exciting intersection of my love for art, architecture and one of St. Louis’ most iconic attractions.”
